Development

I created 4 sequences on Premiere intending to create 4 videos however, we found that we could only have 3 projectors and screens on the day of assessment and so created 3 videos instead. As mentioned in the previous post I was editing skincare videos as one of the sequences. For the second sequence I wanted to find different adverts to skincare but still wanting to show how adverts can be reinterpreted to represent almost the ‘weird side of YouTube’ so I gathered some chewing gum, chocolate and drinking adverts and edited them together slowing, speeding up and reversing many of these videos to still give that queasy feeling when you watch it all together.

As a third and final sequence I took the brand logos from the adverts I had used and cut them up to be 1 second long each to create a flashing ‘strobe’ effect. I also found whilst editing a drinks advert that it had this caption ‘Image Is Nothing’ shown in the picture below and felt this would give a good representation of the installation.

These videos all lasted up to roughly a minute long to which I then looped them as the intention is to make the installation a little unbearable after watching these videos for a few minutes or longer.

Final Assessment – Advert Installation

Here is my Global Perspectives Final Assessment – Advert Installation

In the technical rehearsal I decided to have two of the projectors screens opposite one another and one in line with the two in between them since I knew I could not make a cubed shape installation to walk into without creating a shadow from the projectors across the screens. I felt that this was the most immersive that I could create with the materials we had at hand and was happy with the outcome.

I connected the 3 projectors to the 3 Macs we had in the room choosing the brand logos to be in the middle. The main projector faced the middle screen and the other two projectors sat on plinths next to the two projector screens shining onto the opposite screens, I also then had to readjust the zoom, focus and keystone on the projectors.

Overall, I am pleased with the outcome of my installation, I was unsure how the videos would look until the technical rehearsal the day before but was pleasantly surprised that they looked as good as they did. I feel that it did show the fakery and not-so-nice side of adverts with them always shown as perfect brands and products, I am satisfied enough to think that I was able to show that these adverts are quite obvious in their selling and propaganda to the consumer in a clear way where they try to create a subtleness about it.

I also feel it went well due to audience member’s reactions as one said that it made you go through a mixture of emotions to one saying that it starts to get more and more strange the longer you watch it for.

In future, I would develop this by creating longer videos before looping them as you could add many more adverts into this as it is an open subject on adverts in general and how we consume them. I would also like to add more screens to make it more overwhelming and impressive atmosphere.

In conclusion, I thoroughly enjoyed developing the final assessment and would like to create more installations in the future. I also thought the other projects in the class were really imaginative and had a lot of fun participating in Rosie’s assessment.

Research

A 3-piece installation called ‘China Doll’ based on the shift in culture with China and how it has become a ‘threatening new superpower’ whilst being ‘fragile porcelain’. I liked the meaning behind the installation and how you can see the reference to it. It is displayed interestingly with the middle screen being the most immersive. This helped me develop on how I would like my installation to be displayed and which video would be shown on what screen.

  • St Paul’s Cathedral – The first church in Britain to display a permanent video installation created by Bill Viola

  • Fallen Angel‘ was quite a shocking and controversial art installation which I came across a while back last year, however it was these types of installations which influenced me to create the creepy idea of the videos in my own installation.

  • 554 episodes of The Simpsons – This was something our lecturer had shown us in a previous session. I found this quite intriguing on how they all merged together at one point in time and then created complete chaos at another.

Documentation of development

I found it quite difficult to use AV Mixer Pro being a new software to myself and it was very slow on my laptop and so I decided to make my project an installation for people to just experience.

My finalised idea for the assessment is to base the installation on adverts and brands. The video below shows some of the editing process of some skincare videos I took off YouTube.

This was a gradual editing process where I used the speed/duration to create an eerie effect on the videos. I also tried out various video effects and decided that I wanted the installation in black and white (luma corrector) whilst also having the colour key on the videos to take out some of the black/white on them. This I feet would create a weird and more bizarre installation as intended.

References and Research

I took influence from Kraftwerk, whom we learnt about in a previous module, for my original idea of the stance and what myself and the other two performers would act like for the performance. Here is one of their song ‘Robots’ which I found fascinating to watch as they barely move throughout, hence ‘Robots’ I suppose.

I had also come across Blue Man Group beforehand, here is one of their performances:

This gave me the idea of masks and black clothing, I also liked the way they performed so mostly scrapped the idea of standing still when performing and as the masks would be on the top of our heads, we could easily sway side to side or bob our heads up and down to create a strange visual whereas if we wore the masks simply on our face it would not be as effective moving about.

I found it quite difficult to research on graphic scores with backstories apart from the ones we had already looked at in lectures and a few images online. I did enjoy ‘Treatise’ by Cornelius Cardew and took influence from that (linked in a previous post). Here are two images that helped me create my Graphic Scores:

As mentioned, I found it quite challenging to find graphic scores to my interest but found a very good article from The Guardian showing all different kinds of graphic scores after researching about Cornelius Cardew.

Graphic Music Scores – In Pictures

I also felt I took an influence of works from the artist Picasso as he uses many shapes and sizes to create avant-garde paintings such as this:

Furthermore, I was influenced by Dawson – Davies (Link in improvisation resources) with the improvisation they created being quite droning and atmospheric. I wanted to base my improvisation around that and into a darker tone.

MVM – Final Assessment (Music Video)

In this final assessment, I created a music video using the Nokia Lumia 1020 phone with a grip case attached to a small tripod. The video location was set in where I live, Porthcawl as I find it scenic and a good location to film in for this type of film.

My plan of the story in the film was to have only one character in it of which looked dazed and confused throughout, showing her walking on the beach and staring at the sea during the day and as night closes she walks into the fairground and finds herself in a hectic place, becoming more confused and then eventually to finalise the video, the character walks passed a missing poster of herself. This ending scene sums up the video of that the character has amnesia and doesn’t remember herself in having the case of memory loss.

The video itself was filmed over two days on different beach areas in Porthcawl as to the one I mainly wanted shown in the storyboard (Coney Beach). This was only a problem as of it being a busy public beach so I changed the location to film in more isolated areas in Porthcawl.

I was initially influenced by the song ‘Every Other Freckle’ by Alt-J. This was because the use of colour in the video and the character focus and close-ups. I analysed this in the first brief of this module which is posted below as well as the music video for it.

The editing process was done in the software Adobe Premiere Pro CS6. I created overlays of a few clips by changing the opacity, sped up/slowed down/reversed clips by using the speed/duration, and colour corrected the clips by using the three-way colour corrector, equaliser and levels. I also used basic effects such as the black and white effect and the cross dissolve. I didn’t add many effects as I wanted it to have a simple look and not ‘overdone’.

I am happy with the outcome of my video, however to improve again I would lower the ISO and always use the tripod as sometimes I filmed without it and is less stable.
